Inu Hariko

inuhariko web

Posters, iPhone cases, T-shirts of this design now available here!

When I visited the Edo-Tokyo Museum in Tokyo, Japan, a few years ago, I fell in love with the traditional clay dog figurines called “inu hariko.” The figurines are very simple and rounded, and decorated with bright coloured paints in blues, reds, and yellows. They were said to protect the home and ensure safe childbirth, but mostly they are just gosh-darn cute!

I’ve made this poster design with a traditional Japanese textile pattern in the background and added some digital noise for a more worn-in look. I really enjoyed making this… the rounded shapes are just so fun to draw :)
